SCENE THREE

The downstairs parlor of the Prescott estate, later that morning. CEDRIC and AMELIA are making last minute preparations in anticipation of the arrival of the VON WOLFINGS. CEDRIC paces nervously by the fireplace, dressed in tux, trying to fathom the logistics of the wedding while AMELIA is removing brandy glasses from the cabinet, arranging them on a tray.

CEDRIC

Now, shall they take the vows here -- or over there?

AMELIA

Where shall I put these?

CEDRIC

‘Course there might be a little more room over there, but then I think this has nicer sight lines.

AMELIA

Dear?

CEDRIC

Oh God, I’m so terrified.

(She leaves them where they are, crosses to him)

AMELIA

Calm down.

CEDRIC

I just know something is going to go wrong. All this planning, our hopes of restoring the Prescott name. It all seemed to be working so perfectly, and now this -- their daughter is some kind of monster. Wolves, werewolves, I’m too old for this. Where in heaven’s name is James? He’s supposed to be helping out.

AMELIA

He’s getting Master Lawrence dressed.

CEDRIC

I can’t take much more of this. I need a brandy.

(He moves to liquor cabinet)

AMELIA

You don’t want to overdo it.

CEDRIC

Yes, I do.

(He pours himself a brandy, gulps it down)

Oh, that’s better. Where in the world is James? James????!!!!

(He crosses up to window, looks out)

No sign of them. Everything must be perfect. How do I look?

AMELIA

Fine.

CEDRIC

Tweak me.

(She moves to him, works with his tie)

AMELIA

There -- you’re perfection.

CEDRIC

How to maintain in the face of all of this. At all costs we must maintain. If James doesn’t get down here. James?!?!?

(He pours himself another brandy, gulps it down)

AMELIA

You’re not going to maintain that way.

CEDRIC

Numb is probably the best policy at this point. To think, yesterday I was so hopeful. Then all this business with the wolves started. I’ve never heard of such a thing. Just let this be over with, please God, let this be over with.

(JAMES comes in, dressed in a suitcoat that seems shabby)

JAMES

You called, sir?

CEDRIC

Where have you been?

JAMES

Just taking care of last minute details.

CEDRIC

You look shabby. Where’s Master Lawrence?

JAMES

I thought we might want to talk about that, sir.

CEDRIC

That coat -- no, James, no.

JAMES

This is my finest, sir, my very finest.

CEDRIC

It’s frayed, James, very frayed.

JAMES

You have to admit, I cut a fine figure, sir.

AMELIA

He may have a point, James. Can’t we do a little better than that?

JAMES

On what he pays me?

AMELIA

(to Cedric)

You could be a little more generous, dear. Very well. I’d better check on Master Lawrence. If the guests arrive, call out.

(She goes out)

CEDRIC

James, what’s this you said about Master Lawrence?

JAMES

We might have a problem there, sir.

CEDRIC

You were supposed to get him dressed. What is holding things up?

JAMES

The little matter of his hand, sir. It looks rather grotesque and it seems to be shaking.

CEDRIC

What are you implying?

JAMES

You see, we were standing in front of the mirror, sir, and as I tried to jacket him, well, that hand was making things very difficult. Naturally, we tried to stuff it away. That’s a nasty hand he’s got, sir, it really refuses to cooperate. I wonder if -- well, it’s impossible, of course, but I wonder if he might not also be one of those -- things.
